I love lashes! Each year more and more women agree, making eyelash extensions the fastest growing service in the beauty industry. As popular as they are, lash extensions are a relatively new service. Not many people had heard of them 10 years ago, and now you might see more women with lashes than without! Since the eyelash extensions industry is new, there are still many questions, and plenty of room for innovation!

Requirements for lash artists vary state by state, most requiring an esthetics license. The truth is most esthetic schools do not actually teach lash extensions! The ones that do may cover the subject for a week or so, sending their students out woefully unprepared to service actual customers. There are many eyelash extension product companies that offer training. In exchange for big bucks, students receive a one or two day training course that covers the basics, at best (some trainings do not even teach you how to hold your tweezers!) and then they give a certificate of completion. This process sends their students away, broke and crying, because they are still unprepared for lashing. It can take years of trial and error, apprenticeships, and dedication to produce a good lash artist.

A lash extension artist with improper training can cause serious (sometimes permanent) damage to your lash follicles or leave you with a sloppy look and/or an unflattering design. Natural eyelashes must be perfectly isolated one from the others during application. If your lash extensions become stuck together, a faster growing lash will pull out the ones they are stuck to, causing balding of the natural lashes. If this happens once or twice, you can recover by having a good artist access the damage and remove harmful extensions. An eyelash serum may be necessary to restore your lashes to a healthy state. Repeated damage can result in permanent bald spots. If you ever feel pain, itching, or discomfort, you need attention right away! Do not pick or pull at your extensions. Your artist can easily and quickly remove any problem lashes.

Placement of the extension to your natural eyelash is critical. Eyelash extensions should be applied as close as possible to the lash line, without touching the eyelid, with the tips pointing to the ceiling regardless of direction or angle. This ensures stability and a clean look, without which your lashes may flop to the side as they grow out, or you may have poor retention. If the lashes are improperly placed, such as when they are stuck onto your skin, this can cause discomfort and follicle irritation. You will have a suction-cup-looking chunk on the lash extension as it grows out.

A lash artist with proper technical skills will leave you with healthy lashes, and a great artist knows design as well. This includes using at least 4 different lash sizes to create a complimentary shape, finishing and tapering inner corners, regardless of the longest length used throughout. I have seen many examples of ladies with one size (no shape!) throughout their lashes, with inner corners way too long and bothersome, or inner corners not finished at all. More than just creating a good shape, it must be a good shape for you! Not every shape is suitable for every eye type.

A great lash artist knows the elements of design; how to find that perfect shape for your unique eyes and can offer a variety of styles to suit your personality. For years, the lash extension industry has been hung up on menus and categories based primarily on lash density alone: Classic, Mix (Hybrid), Volume, some even offer Mega Volume. Three, maybe four offerings. This type of menu leaves clients with no clue as to what styling options are available, or how to communicate their desires to their lash artist. These status quo offerings are not effective when the goal is to give clients the lashes of their dreams!
